The Guam Museum is pleased to welcome Ms. Katie Brownfiel, the newest Friend of
the Guam Museum and volunteer member sharing her passion and knowledge of
writing with the community. The volunteer program is inspired by the Guam Museum
Foundation (GMFI) who is an extension of the Guam Museum division of Department of
CHamoru Affairs (DCA) and assists in various ways.

About the Class:

A picture is worth a thousand words, and the museum is full of
stories! In this family-friendly class, Ms. Brownfiel will help you to write ekphrastic
poems (poems inspired by and about works of art) that are inspired by the rich history of
the museum followed by a private tour of the Guam Museum’s newest exhibition titled:
“Ginan Halom (Within)”.

About the Instructor:

Katie Brownfiel is an English teacher who is passionate about storytelling and one who recently became a Friend of the Guam Museum

Katie Brownfiel is an English teacher who is passionate
about storytelling and one who recently became a Friend of the Guam Museum
(Volunteer Program organized by the Guam Museum Foundation, Inc.). She graduated
from the College of William & Mary with a BA in English and Secondary Education. She
has had experience working with Penguin Random House and the former Poet
Laureate of Virginia to learn more about the publishing, writing, and editing processes.
Her short story, “Rue du Chameau” was published in Plain China. She is an avid
supporter of literary arts and stays involved in her community.

The class is open to all

The class is open to all, however children under the age of 16 shall be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please review museum etiquette on page 2.

Etiquette:

All of the museum’s rules are designed to keep the visitors and the island’s treasures safe. Please make sure you and/or your group know and understand understands responsibilities in the museum including, but not limited to the following:

  • All visitors, guides, teachers and/or chaperones act in a safe manner.
  • Be Respectful. Speak softly and respect others including museum staff.
  • Do Not Touch anything on display unless signs in the gallery let you know it’s ok to touch.
    Oils and grease from fingerprints and hands can damage artifacts, cases, and exhibition
    panels.
  • Walk, don’t run, for your safety, and others including for the protection of the collections.
  • Stay together. Large groups or student groups must stay with their guide, teacher and/or
    chaperone at all times while in the museum.
  • Cell phones should be in silent mode.
  • No flash photography. Light can damage artifacts and exhibition panels.
  • No Food and drinks in the exhibits, theater, research area, and curation lab.
  • Reserve the elevator for those with disabilities or strollers.
  • Do not open Alarmed Emergency Doors unless it is an emergency.
  • Any item left behind will be held at the admissions desk for NO more than seven (7) days.
  • Encourage group of visitors or students to ask questions, participate and Have Fun!
  • Do Not Bring additional children or infants who are not intended for event, class or tour or
    from the school, organization or company.

Conduct and Liability:

The museum reserves the right to immediately expel anyone from the premises and/or terminate a tour, large or small, field trip, or event to include forfeiture of any admission, event space fees and/or deposits who in its judgment is non-compliant with any/all applicable Territorial and Federal laws, conducting illegal activities in and/or around the premises, and more specifically:

  • Participating in any act jeopardizing the safety of visitors, staff and/or building and its contents, rights, use permit, or insurability of the DCA/GM.
  • Expressing threats and/or violence of any kind, and disorderly behavior will not be tolerated.
  • Handling, damaging Guam’s artifacts and remnants in any way.
  • Intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol or drugs; Illegal consumption or serving of alcohol minors on the premises at any time.
  • Smoking or vaping of any kind is not allowed in the building or within 20 feet of anyentrances.
