Event Recap: Hasso - Ti Geran Mami | Remember - A War Not of Our Making
On a poignant evening at the Guam Museum, we gathered to honor the memories and stories of those affected by World War II in Guam. The event, “Hasso – Ti Geran Mami | Remember – A War Not of Our Making,” was an emotional and educational experience that left a lasting impression on all attendees.
Key Highlights
Film Screenings
The event featured two significant films that spoke to the war era of Guam:
- “Along the Ugum River”
- “War for Guam”
These films provided deep insights into the impact of WWII on Guam’s culture, the island, and its people. The narratives brought to life the harrowing yet resilient spirit of the islanders during the war.
War for Guam
Discover the compelling story of the Chamorro people during World War II. Despite enduring brutal Japanese occupation, the Chamorros remained loyal to the U.S. The film reveals the post-war struggle as the U.S. military stripped them of their ancestral lands. What began as a story of rescue became one of reoccupation and a new fight for justice.
Along the Ugum River
Based on true events from 1972, this gripping tale follows a CHamoru fisherman who discovers a Japanese soldier straggler. He faces a moral dilemma—should he turn the soldier in or seek vengeance for his family, who were victims of the Imperial Japanese Army during the war?
Survivor Stories
Adding to the evening’s significance, survivors of the World War II era shared their stories. Their words were a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of our people. These firsthand accounts added to our island’s 80th anniversary of Guam’s Liberation, offering a unique perspective on the island’s history and the enduring spirit of its inhabitants.
Purpose and Reflection
The event wasn’t solely about raising funds for the Guam Museum; it aimed to raise awareness about the island’s history. Part of the Guam Museum’s mission is to preserve and share the stories of our people for generations to come. The stories shared during the event are a testament to the courage and determination of those who lived through such a tumultuous time. Together, we remembered the lives and unwavering spirit of our families, learning from their experiences to build a better future.
Audience Feedback
The event resonated deeply with many attendees, especially descendants of those who lived through the war. The emotional impact was palpable as current generations connected with the stories of those struggling with the post-war effects. Hearing about the significant figures of the war era and their influence on the island’s future provided valuable learning opportunities for everyone present.
Looking Forward
We are excited to continue our mission of support for the Guam Museum with our next event, “Tuba, Chesa yan Setbesa Dos,” on July 16th. We invite everyone to join us as we further explore and celebrate the rich history and culture of Guam.
