The Guam Museum, a division of the Department of CHamoru Affairs invites you to attend the HITA Lecture Series. The HITA program offers ways to openly discuss and raise awareness about Guam’s “Heritage, Ideas, Traditions and Art” (HITA), but more importantly, Guam’s cultural, socio-political, and environmental work that impact and/or importantly improve our island resources and day-to-day life. This month’s speaker is Ms. Sandra
Selk Flores, Executive Director of the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities (CAHA).

Vincent J. Reyes Master of Chamorro Dance

Vincent J. Reyes from the southern village of Malesso is a recognized Master of Chamorro Dance and currently serves as the National Folkdance Director of Guam in charge of Programs and Events under the Guam Council of Arts and Humanities Agency of Guam (CAHA).

About the Speaker:

Vincent J. Reyes from the southern village of Malesso is a recognized Master of Chamorro Dance
and currently serves as the National Folkdance Director of Guam in charge of Programs and Events under the Guam Council of Arts and Humanities Agency of Guam (CAHA). He is most recognized from his work as Director of Inetnon Gefpa’go Cultural Arts Program who have been at the forefront of the perpetuation and promotion of Chamorro Culture through performing arts for over 22 years. The group has traveled to over 29 countries around the world, winning countless awards, both on island and abroad. His group has become a recognizable and credible organization that have serviced thousands of youths and families, binging worldly experiences with a high level of artistry, professionalism, and creativity very different from others, yet relatable to our island community.

Mr. Reyes also sits as Chairperson for Oceania, under the Federation of International Dance Festivals and has served as part of the distinguished panel of esteemed jury members for many international folk dance competitions around the world. Just this past summer, 2022 he judged in festivals in Nova Prata Brazil, Istanbul Turkey, and Cheonan City South Korea.


During his time as a teacher for the Guam Department of Education, he had authored the first Chamorro Studies Curriculum for middle school, which was adopted by the Guam Department of Education School Board of Education in 2012. He then moved to Southern High School where he established the first Chamorro Cultural Performing Arts Academy where students undergo extensive performing arts training that will eventually lead them to school-to-work opportunities when they reach their senior year of high school. Reyes, was the first GDOE employee to everwhen win the Governor’s Magnificent Professional Overall Employee of the Year Award. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Guam and was part of the pioneering team of instructors for the Chamorro Studies Program.

He is now at the Guam Council of Arts and Humanities Agency to work on providing more programing opportunities for indigenous performing artists through the National Indigenous Performing Arts Initiative. With this initiative, he is hoping to establish the creation and implementation of a vibrant, credible, reputable, and successful National Performing Arts Initiative focused on fostering indigenous expressions across all performing art genres which encourages mutual understanding and collaboration among all performing arts disciplines, creates platforms and opportunities for creative excellence and assist in building capacity of performing artists that will ultimate contribute to our islands economy and way of life.
