The Island-wide Celebration of the Santa Marian Kamalen took place last week, including lisåyu siha (rosaries), nobena siha (prayers) and a lukao (procession).

This solemn religious commemoration dates back to the Tiempon Españot (Spanish era) of Guam’s history and is held annually, although it was interrupted by the Japanese invasion of Guam in 1941. The tradition resumed after the American retaking of the island in 1944.

CHamoru children gathering before the Cathedral in Hagåtña prepare to join the Santa Marian Kamalen procession as angels and archangels on December 8, 1941. Father Blas de Cáseda is the priest on the left of the image.

Biba Santa Marian Kamalen!
