Two pre-World War II images of one of the village of Malesso’s most iconic locations, i kamapañåyun or the bell tower.

Two pre-World War II images of one of the village of Malesso’s most iconic locations, i kamapañåyun or the bell tower.

The kampañåyun was erected in the 1910s under the leadership of Father Cristobal de Canals, who worked with the US Navy and the people of Malesso’ to improve infrastructure and agriculture in their village.

The kampañåyun was placed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and underwent restoration in the early 1980s.
