Fanihi were a regular part of the CHamoru diet for millennia, but have become highly endangered due to overhunting, loss of habitat and the brown tree snake.

It isn’t clear how many fanihi are left in Guam, since they often fly back and forth between Guam and Rota.

They have been declared an endangered species and it is now illegal to hunt or harm in any way the fanihi in Guam.
