An elderly CHamoru man walking in front of the kampañåyan (bell tower) in the southern village of Malesso' (Merizo).

The kampañåyan was erected in the 1910s under the leadership of Father Cristobal de Canals, who worked with the US Navy and the people of Malesso’ to improve infrastructure and agriculture in their village.

The kampañåyan was placed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and underwent restoration in the early 1980s.
