A map of Guam’s capital, Hagåtña from the year 1915.
Prior to World War II, the majority of Chamorus lived in Hagåtña. but maintained lancho siha or ranches elsewhere on the island.
As you can see on the map, Hagåtña was divided into districts or barrios and many elders prefer to say that they are from Santa Cruz, San Nicolas or Julale. Do you know where your family lived in Hagåtña? Comment and share where your family traces its roots.
How has Hagåtña changed over the past century? How has it stayed the same? If you look carefully at the map, you may notice some landmarks are still there and some have been moved over time.
